Traveling Back in Time

Simone's favorite subject this year is Virginia History, which is basically a study of early American history. They just finished their unit on the Civil War and took a very exciting field trip to Waterford, Virginia.  They visited this one room school house which was built for the local African American population just two years after the Civil War ended. Today it is maintained as a National Historic Landmark and hosts schools across from across the county to teach them about the period by experiencing a typical school day as it was in 1880.

The whole class tries to reenact the day as closely as possible to historic traditions, and each child plays a role of one of the actual students at the school at that time.

All of the children introduced themselves to the class in their assigned role and told the entire class about their family.  Simone was assigned to represent Edith Cleggett, and 8 year old second grader -- the only child in her family that attended school.

They each got a turn practicing their penmanship with a quill pen.  A huge hit with all the kids!  And for what it's worth, learned that writing with a quill isn't so easy!

The kids even packed a period lunch with no modern conveniences such as tin foil, plastic wrap, or paper bags.  Simone's lunch was a boiled potato, an apple, a roll, and an oatmeal cookie -- wrapped in a cotton towel.

At lunch time they also played games -- tug of war and hoops.

The whole class had a great time, and I dare say, learned a lot.  I'm not sure any of them would trade their electronics and indoor plumbing to do this everyday, but it was a great experience for just one day!

Great fun to launch the last quarter of fourth grade!

Quick Update

It's been a while, so just thought I'd give a short update.  Not too much going on here with the Dotson trio, but last weekend did bring us a new experience to share with everyone.  Simone was excited to go to her school's first basketball game PTO fundraiser.  The faculty of her school played the faculty of a nearby elementary school-- the house was packed, and school spirit was enormous.  It was also Simone's first basketball game ever.

 GO WELLER WILDCATS!!

In the end, our team lost.  But the game was close and we had a great time cheering on her teachers.

The next day, we went for dinner at a nearby diner.  Nothing terribly eventful, but Simone had a lots of fun playing the jukebox at our table as we enjoyed a pleasant family day in northern VA.

Beyond that we just did some grocery shopping, went to church, and tried to recharge a bit for the week ahead.  Just around the corner will be Spring Break and Easter as well as Simone's school variety show and her 4th grade field trip.  Lots to keep us busy and counting our daily blessings!

Happy Presidents' Day!

I'm almost afraid to say it out loud, but.... I think spring may have arrived early.  We have just finished enjoying some of the most glorious weather we could ask for on this three-day weekend. Hard to believe it's February around here! We also had a visit from the Dyer family to mark the holiday weekend with equal parts relaxation and celebration.

On Saturday we had a late morning tea, took a long walk, went for a swim, and enjoyed a Presidents' Day dinner at home.  Simone helped me set a festive table for the meal, but we forgot to take a picture.

On Sunday we did some shopping, went out for dinner, and had a super fun family game night--which was all Simone's idea.  As much as we hate to concede, Team Daddies won (but we all think they cheated, lol!)

And finally, on Monday we set out early to go to the National Museum of African American History and spent the day in DC.  Totally fantastic!

Who would have thought that late February would have given the perfect outdoor weekend?   We're all keeping our fingers crossed that winter doesn't make a comeback this year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Happy 2017
to all of our family and friends!  May you all be blessed this year with peace, happiness, health and wealth.
We spent a quiet night at home in our pajamas enjoying a multi course dinner and lots of relaxation.  We made it to midnight and rung in the new year watching the ball drop in Times Square.
We made our family avatars after dinner tonight!

Not a lot of photos except for our dinner shots...
Table for 3!

Simone minutes before midnight.

Here we come 2017!

Merry Christmas!

We've just returned from Pennsylvania where we spent Christmas with Simone's grandparents and cousins.  Simone had a great week in which just about her every holiday wish was granted.  Santa brought her much of her wish list, she went iceskating with her cousins, saw the movie "Sing", learned how to make her own scrambled eggs, got a knitting lesson from Grammy, and we even got a few inches of snow to do some sledding and playing with all the kids.  When I asked her what her favorite part of the week was she paused and said firmly, "All of it."

The whole adventure started with our traditional Christmas Even dinner and gift exchange.  Aunt Suzy provided matching shirts for all of the littles to wear.

The whole gang on Christmas morning.

With even more cousins at Aunt Sheree's on Christmas day.
All of the girls loved ice skating together.  They stayed on the ice for nearly two hours and worked up quite an appetite.

Giving Madalyn a helping hand.

After lots of skating and a warm lunch, we ended up with a van full of sleeping littles on the drive  home.
And on the last day, much to everyone's surprise, we woke to a winter wonderland.  The kids could not have been more thrilled!  They had two full rounds of outside play interrupted only by lunch.

Insisted on building the obligatory snowman with no help.  They were so proud of themselves.

And just when they thought it couldn't get any better, Pop delivered the best treat of all...

The holidays are always a favorite time for Simone -- she loves getting so much cousin time.  This one was particularly awesome.  All the kids are growing up so fast, and it's nice to know that they will always have these amazing childhood memories together.  And now, we will ring in the new year back home in Virginia.
